Prepare for Your Mediation Day
A little preparation can make your Divorce Plan in a Day Mediation more focused and productive. This checklist is for self-represented couples meeting in Summerville, Charleston, or online anywhere in South Carolina.
Bring a clear financial picture
-
We provide you with detailed instructions prior to mediation regarding what you need to bring or provide. These include:
-
Recent pay information and applicable tax returns.
-
Bank, investment, and retirement account balances.
-
A list of property, vehicles, other assets, and debts.
-
Information about recurring household and personal expenses.
-
Documents that help explain the issues you want to discuss.
Think through parenting arrangements
We also provide you with checklists to work on regarding a parenting plan- including issues you may not have thought about. If you have children, consider school-week routines, weekends, holidays, transportation, childcare, and communication. Bring a proposed schedule and relevant school or childcare information. Identify what is working now and what needs to change.
Know your priorities and possible compromises
Write down your most important goals, questions, and concerns. Separate what you need from what you would prefer. Consider more than one workable solution. You do not need to have an agreement before you attend- that's part of what mediation is for.
Consider independent legal advice
Carolyn serves as a neutral mediator and represents neither party. An independent attorney can explain your rights and help you evaluate proposed terms before you sign. You can ask an attorney about a limited-scope consultation.
Plan for the meeting
For an in-person session, confirm the date and arrangements at 211-B Stallsville Loop, Summerville, SC 29485. We are a short drive from Charleston, Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, Goose Creek, Park Circle, North Charleston, Nexton, and Carnes Crossroads. Couples outside of Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties can ask about virtual mediation. For an online session, arrange a private location, reliable internet, and access to your documents.
Preparation FAQs
What if a document is missing?
Ask the office about preparation before your session. Some issues may need more information before you can make informed decisions.
Can I explain my side privately beforehand?
Keep advance emails focused on scheduling and the process. Include the other party whenever possible. Do not send private accounts of the dispute or ask the mediator to take a position.
Does completing the checklist guarantee an agreement?
No. Preparation helps you use the day well, but settlement is voluntary and not guaranteed. Court filings and approval remain separate steps.
